Could a Career in Esthetics be for You?

by Lindsey Johnson

Have you ever gotten a facial, felt incredibly rejuvenated afterward, and wondered how you can get into the field?  Do you have a passion for make up artistry? Did you – or do you – suffer from problem skin and want to give back by helping others to address their skin issues?  If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, then becoming an Esthetician might be the perfect career move for you!

Esthetics is a highly specialized field within the beauty industry that can be both lucrative and rewarding. In an Esthetics program, students learn to use specialized facial techniques for preventive and corrective skin care. While in school, you may learn European facial techniques, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, back and body treatments, facial and body waxing, electric therapy, LED light therapy, make up artistry, and more! You will learn how to address common concerns such as maturing skin, acne, dry and/or oily skin, rosacea, fine lines, dark spots – and the list goes on and on!

Facials and Body Treatments

Training in Esthetics prepares you to work in a variety of settings. Many graduates go on to work in salons, day spas, resorts, plastic surgery offices, dermatology practices, medi-spas, and cruise ships, to name a few. With an Esthetics license, you have the opportunity to work alongside medical professionals in treating skin conditions and preventing skin issues from returning in patients. If the clinical route is not for you, there is always the spa setting, whether at a resort, a day spa or on a cruise ship. For multitudes of women and men, nothing is more relaxing and refreshing than a day at the spa! Providing services from mud wraps to body scrubs to oxygenating facials allows you to contribute to the rejuvenation and wellness of spa goers. In addition, with the desire for anti-aging services on the rise, being able to address concerns of maturing skin is an excellent way to build clientele and secure your future!

Waxing

Another popular business model that is popping up all over the country is the waxing studio. Estheticians in these businesses focus entirely on facial and body waxing.  Many offer discounted packages for return customers, which is a great way to build a clientele, especially for recent graduates.

Make Up Artistry

Make up artistry is also a great way to put your Esthetics training into practice! Many Esthetics programs teach traditional make up applications, as well as corrective make up, airbrushing techniques, fantasy make up and other specialty make up applications. As a make up artist who is licensed in Esthetics, your specialized training will give you an edge above the competition. By having a thorough understanding of the structure of the skin and how ingredients in make up can positively (or negatively) affect the skin, you will be able to provide optimum results for your make up clients.

With so many opportunities available to Estheticians, it is easy to see why this field is  growing!
