Staying Current: The Importance of Continuing Education

by Alexandra Luce

The first time I meet with the student we go over all the different avenues down which they can travel with their career. Regardless of the direction you take, one thing is for certain: this industry will continue to evolve and you can either keep with the times or fall behind. It is one of the many things that makes being a cosmetologist exciting and dynamic. It also means that you will need to do some research to ensure that no one ever asks for the newest and coolest style or treatment that you will have to admit you don’t know how to perform yet. Before you graduate from school you have learned what is current and necessary for your career, but your education will never stop.

Here are some ways you can find classes and continuing education around you:

As you will know from your time as a student, Empire uses only professional products for your education. One of those brands is Goldwell. As an industry leader in color, they are an incredible resource if you have the opportunity to attend their classes. If color is your passion, you may also choose to become a certified master colorist through Goldwell. You can check out classes offered at here.

Another great resource is CosmoProf. They continually offer classes across a variety of subjects. You may take one or you may take them all. One of the more intriguing aspects is the chance to gain instruction on the newest products on the market. This will give you a broader base of knowledge to instruct your clients on products that may be best for them. Retail sales are an extra way to bring in revenue for you and your salon and the knowledge you have gained at these classes will give you an advantage to have the newest and the best products at your salon.

Whether you take a little or a lot away from these classes it will be time well spent. They are extra education to put on your resume and show a drive and determination to stay at the top of your field. It is also a great way to network with other cosmetologists whether local or states away. You never know who they may put you in contact with in the future to further your own career. If ever you are having trouble finding classes or education, never hesitate to contact your campus. The staff will always be happy to hear from you and help you find resources to help you along the way.

Share with us some of the great classes you took to help keep you on top.  Has an opportunity opened up for you while taking an advanced class?
