Game of Beauty

by Megan Murray

People are obsessed with HBO’s Game of Thrones. A certain “ purple wedding” episode blew up social media for days, and you can’t pass by a water cooler without someone mentioning the word “dragons.”  While this show is a dense, intricately woven fantasy, it also has some of the most amazing costuming, make- up, and hair to ever grace the small-screen.

This summer, take some fashion and beauty tips from the houses of Westeros.

House Lannister – So, Cersei Lannister is a lying, scheming, conniving, heartless woman with really, really, really, (did I mention…really) needs to expand her dating circle. While it is easy to hate this woman, she always looks like she is lit by candles. Get the “lioness look” by using a gold luminizing powder or cream on your nose, cheekbones, on your cupid’s bow, and top it with a bit of color-less powder. You will look “ lit from within” without the whole awkward sibling relationship issues.

House Stark- Ok, so most of them are dead, and the rest of them could probably use a telethon. Yet despite it all, Sansa Stark is an ethereal beauty. Sure, winter is over, but soft, iridescent make-up is season less. Try a frosty white-blue eye shadow on your lids, and a stained pink lip. Accessories your hair with braids and pearls to give your summer a little bit of Winterfell – without the snow, ice, beheadings, and red weddings.

House Tyrell- Ok, you know who is cooler than Olenna Tyrell? No one. Yet her grand daughter, the beautiful Margaery, comes close.  House Tyrell is the house of flowers, and florals are everywhere this summer.  Be bold and wear a floral headband in your hair, yet be soft with feminine necklines, pastels, and lace. You can look like you are “growing strong” without having to marry…well…Joffrey.

House Martell- This new house to the TV landscape epitomizes everything that is great about summer. Orange, red, and gold hues, flowing dresses, ornate sandals, and accessories that never bow, bend, or break are the look for this flamboyant house. Pair an orange maxi dress with gold sandals, plenty of gold accessories, and lots of eyeliner. You will look beautiful while plotting glorious revenge.

House Greyjoy – nothing to see here folks…moving on…

House Targaryen – Now, did you really think I would skip “ The Mother of Dragons”?
It’s sandal season, and there is no better way to tell the world that you are Khaleesi than a dragon-scale pedicure. Don’t try this at home…this level of nail art is best left to the professionals…random x’s on your toes is not a cute look! If you don’t want to go “ on the nose,” you could try a green manicure with some silver bracelets, or an iridescent bronzey pedicure with ornate, bronze shoes. You can rule in style, and no one has to be lit on fire.

With these beauty and fashion ideas, you can wear your fandom without going full-on cosplay. Of course if you HAVE gone full-on cosplay, we want to see pictures!!

So, beautiful readers, what fandom inspires your look? Are you a Whovian? Do you salt and burn it, Winchester Style? Can they find you at 221b Baker Street? Let us know!!!
