empire-harrisburg-campEmpire Beauty School of Harrisburg hosted two, week-long camps at the Milton Hershey School in Hershey this summer.  The camp was hosted to promote interest in the cosmetology industry and Empire Beauty School.  The camps ran during August, and attracted a total of 28 students, 9 the first week and 19 the second week.

Instructor Tiffany Renninger was in charge of the camp at the Milton Hershey School, which is a year-round, private and cost-free home and school for children from families with low income, limited resources and social need.

With the help of Hope Latimore, an Empire graduate, and Kohlee Rice, an Empire student  and MHS graduate, Renninger educated the students about the basics of washing hair, braiding, up-do styles, curling hair, flat ironing, facials, manicures, and the benefits of working in the cosmetology industry.

The MHS students were able to practice on mannequins and perform exchange manicures and facials on one another.  Renninger said she gained a renewed passion for cosmetology from the experience.  “Every morning they had a speaker to get you energized for the day,” said Renninger, “I found myself going in a little earlier each day so I could hear the speaker’s motivational speech.”

The camp was a positive experience for both the students and the instructors.  Most of the students, ranging from 10th through 12th grad, seemed to have a positive outlook on what was called “Cosmo Camp” and there is a buzz among students and faculty that it may result in a vocational cosmetology program at the school.
