The Empire Beauty School in Queens, New York was featured in an article about how the Astoria neighborhood in Queens has fared unusually well despite tough economic times. According to the article, “While Astoria hasn’t been totally immune from the economic slump, an analysis of employment and other data conducted for Crain’s by research firm ESRI shows that overall” the Astoria neighborhood “stands as the most recession-resistant” in New York City.

The article highlights Steinway Street in Astoria in particular. Brooklyn Bagel & Coffee Co. opened a new store on Steinway Street and it is flourishing, as are retail chains like Gap and The Center for an Urban Future and plenty of restaurants. Timothy King, principal of CPEX Realty, was interviewed for the article and he said, “Steinway is one of the most desirable corridors in the city. It is surrounded by canyons of apartments, a stable population base, and good transportation.”

Laurence Nunes, Director of Education at the Astoria Empire Beauty School in Queens, was also interviewed. He told Crain’s that “Astoria is the kind of place that you can feel at home. That helps us to boost our enrollment.” According to Nunes, at the Astoria Empire Beauty School at Broadway and Steinway streets in Queens, beauty student “enrollment rose 12% to 150 since last year.” The Empire beauty school “recently hired two teachers and is seeking three more” cosmetology educators.
