Student Stars: An Empire Grad’s Journey to Salon Ownership

by Jess Quandel

Many of our future professionals say beauty has been a lifelong passion, but for Katrina Mack Noecker, cosmetology came as somewhat of a surprise.

I told my guidance counselor up until my senior year that I was going to go to college and I was going to be a math teacher.”

This 2006 Empire Beauty School graduate says it wasn’t until a family friend suggested she capitalize on her creativity, that she considered beauty school.

Today, Katrina owns her own salon, Trina’s Tresses, in Schuylkill Haven, Pennsylvania.
I have people who have known me for years, like my clients and my friends and family, they come in here and they’re like, it’s so you.”

Katrina's 3rd Place winning style.

Katrina recently entered Empire’s 2nd annual Holiday Hair Instagram competition. Hundreds of photos were uploaded to the social media website from people around the country showing off their best holiday themed fantasy hair style and makeup.

Katrina’s husband suggested she enter. “I am not very competitive, but I decided to give it a try and keep it pretty without being over the top, but still, extravagant.

Her style came in 3rd place out of nearly 800 entries. Her great finish has inspired her to possibly enter more competitions, and get her staff involved as well.

I wouldn’t mind doing more. It’s actually kind of fun and now all the girls who work here want to do the next contest.

As for her future plans, Katrina says her dreams stretch beyond owning her own salon.

I am working toward opening a spa as well, and growing my business even further.”

Not bad for a girl who took a chance and followed her heart to a dream career.

You can discover a side of yourself you never knew and you can have fun while doing it.”
