10 Must Have Beauty & Fashion Trends from New York Fashion Week 2014

by Megan Murray

While we were busy with Pumpkin flavors and choosing the perfect fall statement lipstick, the fashion world was focused on Spring 2015.  Mercedes- Benz New York Fashion week 2014 just wrapped up, and the designers gave us a peek into the future of fashion.

Here is a list of some of the must have beauty and fashion trends from the New York Shows:

1. Crisp White Shirt

White layered upon white was everywhere.  From Victoria Beckham’s military inspired suits to Prabal Gurung’s deconstructed casual, this bright neutral ruled the runway.  While all-white fashion may be a bit impractical, a crisp white shirt is a classic way to help you look on-trend for many seasons to come.

2. White Nail Polish

Erin Fetherston’s white nails with gold accents are the ultimate in wearable beauty trends.  This easy look is polished enough for the office, yet exciting enough for a night on the town.

3.  Silver Choker

Silver continues to have its moment as the “it” metal with Coach’s delicate silver choker.  Whether you spend a little or a lot, this classic piece is versatile and subtle enough for an every day look.

4.  Military Inspired Jackets

For Spring, Boho Chic takes a back seat to structure.  Military inspired pieces with lots of hardware pair easily with midi-dresses as well as wide legged jeans.

5.  Embellished Shirts

Ralph Lauren’s collection typified the “ high-low” concept.  Embellished t-shirts were paired beautifully with skirts and jackets in luxe fabrics.  A beautifully embellished shirt will elevate a casual look, and add a bit of edge to more formal occasions.

6.  Gladiator Sandals

Friends, Romans, Countrymen, these will be the IT shoes of the Spring/Summer.  Although we have seen this sandal before, this year’s edition is more structured. A neutral patent leather gladiator sandal looks as perfect with a girlie floral as it does with a sports-inspired pant.

7.  The Midi Skirt

Not too short, not too long…these skirts are just right. The 50’s inspired midi skirt is a fresh look that is universally flattering.

8.  Gingham

Surrender Dorothy, this once-dowdy pattern is now in fashion. Michael Kors, Altuzarra, Diane Von Furstenberg and Oscar de la Renta all showed chic, gingham pieces for Spring 2015.  A flowy gingham skirt or a structured purse is an easy way to incorporate this fun pattern into your look.

9.  Freckles

Runway beauty was decidedly understated. In fact, the models at Marc Jacob’s show wore no makeup at all! While this beauty trend is not something a lot of people would embrace, a sheer look that celebrates imperfections is new, fresh approach.  Once concealed freckles are now a focus.  Makeup artists at the Preen show even used eyeliner to create freckles for a fun look.

10.  The Low Chignon

A low, messy chignon is an easy way to add elegance. This timeless beauty look works with street wear, business wear, or the most formal of gowns.

At the heart of the Spring fashion trends is a feeling of ease. Mix formal and casual pieces for exciting new looks. Pair an embellished shirt with jeans, or add a white t-shirt to a formal skirt.

The Spring 2015 season is all about re-invention!
