whitehall-students-give-bloodCareer Planning Specialist Melissa Cunningham contacted Miller Memorial Blood Center in Bethlehem, PA, to bring their blood mobile to the Empire Beauty School in Whitehall.  The students and staff were eager to donate blood to the non-profit organization.

“This is the second year we have participated in the Miller Blood Drive and it’s becoming an annual event,” noted Susan Kettenberg, Executive Director of the Whitehall school.

Miller Memorial Blood Center’s mobile blood unit collects blood from various types of donors.  Donors are asked several health related questions before blood is drawn, which takes only about five to 10 minutes.

“It was a wonderful feeling when the young lady who was taking my own blood said ‘you just saved three lives today,’” said Kettenberg.

Here are a few good reasons to donate blood:

  • One blood donation can save as many as four lives
  • One out of every seven people entering a hospital needs blood
  • Every two seconds, someone needs blood
  • 40% of the U.S. population is eligible to donate – only 5% do on a yearly basis
