Beauty in Bangs: Does face shape determine your style of bangs

by Empire Beauty School

Do you struggle with how to wear your bangs as much as I do? Should I go with no bangs and just part my hair in the middle? How about side sweeping them to one side but if I do that how do I know which side is better? Maybe I go with a blunt bang and just cut them straight across or do I cut them more whispy looking? Do you ask yourself all these same questions? How to wear your bangs is a big decision when it comes to styling your hair, especially if you decide to take the plunge and cut them. Once you cut them there is no turning back, well, at least until they grow back which could take a long time. To help avoid any hair cut mishaps, the first step to choosing perfect bangs is determine your face shape … is it oval, round, square, long or heart shaped?

Not sure what your face shape is …follow this quick guide to help you figure it out.

1. Pull all your hair back away from your face
2. Then, draw some dots on your face using an eye or lip pencil near your hair line.
3. Next, examine your chin line.
4. Finally, imagine connecting the dots on your face what shape do you see? That will be your face shape.

Now that we were able to determine what our face shape is let’s see which styles best fits certain face shapes.

Oval Faces– this is the perfect face shape, the one we all envy. Almost every style of bangs will look good on an oval face; it’s the most balanced of all the face shapes. If you lucky enough to have this shape, you can change up your style very easily just by changing the style of your bangs. Jessica Alba as seen below can pull off so many different looks with her oval face.

Round Faces – hmm…this would be me.  If your face is round, you want to try and wear your bangs more angled such side swept, fringe or whispy. This will diminish the roundness of your face and make it appear more elongated and oval shaped.  Stay away from the straight across blunt bangs as that will put more emphasis on the widest part of your face.

Square Faces – This face type makes your forehead, cheeks and chin appear the same width so you want to try and make your face appear elongated with out emphasizing your square forehead. You will want to put more of the emphasis on your bangs.  Textured, angled bangs work well with a square face.  You can also get away with blunt bangs as long as they are narrower in the center and not cut too far towards the outer edge.

Square Faces

Heart Shaped Faces – This face shape also suits many different styles of bangs with its high forehead.  However, since the forehead is the widest part and the chin is very narrow you will want to steer away from any type of straight across blunt bang; this will draw more attention to your narrow chin.  Keeping your bangs more angled and off centered will put the focus on your eyes and cheekbones.  Short whispy bangs with some fringe will also work well.

Heart Shaped Faces

Now that we determined what style of bangs work on different face shapes.  Let’s see what you think of Kelly Clarkson’s blunt bang look during her National Anthem performance at last Sunday’s Super Bowl.  Did she pull it off? Does she have the right face for blunt bangs??
