Being In The Business Of People And What That Means

by Brooke Burns

What did we come for?! Education! What did we get?! Lifelong friendships, mentors, clients, co-workers, and future business partners!

Cosmetology is the business of people. Of course, you now have the skills, education, and license to set out on your new career, but you have even more than what you bargained for. You have people and your business is to grow to MORE people every day. How do we grow our clients? We need to do some things.

Personal Touches

We need to send more handwritten Thank You cards. We need to send birthday giveaways for loyal customers, sympathy cards to those who have lost, and congratulations cards to those who have gained. Personal touch items that show time, effort, and thoughtfulness will go a long way in our impersonal text, minimal effort society.

Consistency

We need to keep consistency a key concept behind our chair. Does your salon offer a free amenity with each service, such as a scalp massage? Why not? Can this be done? this is a strategy that will keep the clients coming back and referrals coming in.

Pay it forward – Go The Extra Mile!

Team Building

I’ve also heard the expression, “It starts from the top.” Take 5 – 10 minutes every day to bestow a team building exercise, ad story about the power of teamwork, or whatever motivates and encourages. What if you decided to do this in your salon before opening? What if you decided to go the extra mile each day for a client or a co-worker, and educator or a mentor? What if we all worked and lived like this? Culture building is absolute gospel for creating a positive environment that is passed down to the clients.

Culture

I think we can all agree that the best feeling in the world as a stylist is turning the chair to the mirror for the final look of our client’s eager faces with an abundance of “Wow!” The excitement of how great they look and feel cannot be matched easily.

This same feeling we receive, created by our hands and tools, should also be achieved each day by paying it forward to each other through culture building. The quality of the salon culture and its hairdressers is crucial.

In cosmetology school what person did you gain- a friend, a future co-worker, a mentor? What would you add in your salon to go the extra mile? What would you like to change or see done differently at your current salon? What makes a good leader motivate you?
