Six Essentials for Long Hair

by Katie Schenk

Long hair is gorgeous. There’s no getting around that – but it doesn’t make having long hair any easier on you. Maintaining long hair can be quite a challenge, and it’s certainly one of the reasons women decide to cut it all off.

The good news is that a little time and energy can go a long way… as long as you have the right essentials in your hair kit.

Boar-Bristle Brush

Okay, you probably have half a dozen brushes stuffed in a drawer somewhere. But if you had to narrow it down to one, the flat, boar-bristle brush is the one you should keep. It will keep your hair in check and massage the scalp while doing so.

Wide Tooth Comb

Knots and tangles are just part of everyday life for long-hair. And the best way to get through them is with a wide-tooth comb. If you’re really gentle, you can use this comb in the shower with a bit of conditioner to help you along.

A Go-to Hair Mask

Let’s face it; no matter how often you have a trim, those ends can begin to look a little raggedy. You may find yourself in need of a mask. Be sure to choose the proper one. There are masks for the roots and for the ends.

Serious Hair Dryer

The flimsy, discounted hair dryer you can pick up at the corner drug store is simply not going to work on your hair. You need to invest in a model the pros use… most professional salons will have a selection for you.  These dryers provide various heat settings and airflow.

Flat Iron

Depending on the length of your locks, you may not be able to hold a curl. But, you’ll almost certainly see all the natural kinks and the effects of a good night’s sleep. A flat iron will help keep your locks smooth.

Dry Shampoo

Washing, conditioning, drying, and styling all take forever with long hair. You’re likely to wash your hair less often… and every now and again, you’ll need something to see you through the next day or two. (Don’t deny it!)  Dry shampoo can be your best friend—a little applied and brushed through your hair is a lifesaver!
