Red Hair Everywhere!

by Empire Beauty School

Red hair is the star of the beauty spectrum this year. Stars like Christina Hendricks and Rhianna have taken the notion that, “Gentleman Prefer Blondes” and turned it on its head. Even the redheaded boys, especially those from across the pond, have been causing hearts to flutter. Red hair is having a moment, and with only 4 percent of the world’s population carrying the red haired gene, it is safe to say most of us have to get this coveted hue from some hair-color magic. While the celebrities make it look easy, there is a lot to take into consideration before becoming drop-dead red.

Color : Ok, so you’ve established you want red hair, but you have to take into consideration your personal coloring. You want bombshell, not bozo.  If you are naturally blonde or have a very fair complexion, a strawberry blonde won’t wash out your coloring. A rich terra-cotta red with light skin is always a show-stopper.  Medium skin tones can get away with a little more vibrancy but stay away from bright orange-reds, because it can make you look bright orange all over. Darker and olive skins look amazing with burgundies and violet-based colors. Of course, we have our fashion forward crowd that just wants to go primary red, and all you need to get away with that color is attitude!  Always, always have a beauty professional color your hair red- this is no time to play kitchen beautician!

Care : There is a sad truth about red hair color, it fades. So you are going to have to invest in professional product that is formulated for color-treated hair. This look takes upkeep, and the last thing you want is dark roots and funky orange pink hair, (yes, this has happened to me) so regular salon visits are a must. Of course, the results are worth it!

Make-up: Yes, you are going to have to change your make-up. Red hair is like a giant spotlight on your face. For your features to compete with the color around them, you have to add a little luminosity to your look. Mix your foundation with a little luminizer and add a bit of bronzer to all the places the sun touches. A classic cat eye and red lip was made for redheads, but simplicity with all other looks are key. Keep your look ethereal. Of course, if you are in our “primary red” group, you rock whatever look you want…you will pull it off.
