The Beauty of Blogs

by Empire Beauty School

empire Beauty BlogIf you type the term “beauty blog” into a search engine  you will get pages and pages of results. It seems that if you can type, and you like lipstick, chances are you have a beauty blog. There are a lot of blogs on the internet; however, when blogging is done correctly, it is a powerful marketing tool for the beauty professional.

So here are some tips and tricks to help your beauty blog promote and grow your business:

1.) Write What You Know : You are a beauty professional and you have an impressive arsenal of knowledge.  If you are an impresario at color, make that a focus. If you can out-do anyone with up-do’s make a them a weekly feature. Think of it this way, your blog is your own, personal magazine you can fill with your expertise.

2.) Know Your Audience :  Sure, you want to attract as many clients as possible, but by casting a really wide net you just become more internet noise. You need to do a little research. WHO are your clientele? WHAT would they be interested in? WHERE do they live? WHY are they looking at a beauty blog? Does your local paper/lifestyle magazine have an online option? You could volunteer a blog article with a link-back to your site.

3.) Be Unique:  Use your unique perspective to stand out. Let’s say, for example, that you are a non-traditional beauty student. You can have a, ” Where Have I seen THIS before?” section on your blog where you compare and contrast new trends against trends from a few years ago.  If you are a naturally funny person…use it! If you are a naturally technical person…own it!  Just remember, you need to engage people, not alienate them…

4.) Make it Pretty! : Repeat after me,  ” I (state your name) refuse to put things that blink, sparkle, flash different colors, make eyes bleed, or use the same purple lotus flower design as everyone else on my blog.”  Every blogging platform out there has simple, easy to use and customizeable designs.

5.) Know Your Blogging Platform: Learn how to use tags, call to actions, and keywords, so that people can find you online. Also, make sure you can get people’s e-mail addresses!

6.) Get Social:  Facebook, tumblr, or tweet links to your blogs. If you did a fabulous cut and color on a friend, take a picture ( with a permission waiver…of course), blog about it, post it on her wall, tag a few friends…people are reading YOUR article about YOU.  Also, network with other, more well known, beauty blogs. Offer to write articles for a link-back.

You don’t have to be Hemingway to write a great blog. As a stylist, you communicate with people all day long about the thing you love the most!
