Beauty School Looks on a Budget

by Lori Hudak

Students have a budget. It’s part of being a student – and why you are going to school – so you can have a future career with a more forgiving budget. We’ve all seen pictures of students going to school in sweats and a hat…. Not too flattering, but hey, they are students, right? Well, cosmetology students have a different expectation – a higher standard. From day one, you want to look the part of a successful cosmetologist. Picture how you would like to look when you are successful: nice clothes, manicured nails, perfected hair and makeup. Now think about this, you can look this way in school. How? Think of your overall image and what will it take to make your look professional.

Clothes

You will most likely have some sort of dress code – yes dress code. It’s part of being professional. Chances are the color will be black – the choice of hairstylists – so bonus, it’s professional and a flattering color for everyone. So, before school, invest in some staple pieces. Find clothes that fit well and are comfortable but don’t look sloppy. You also want to try to find a black material that won’t fade too much. Your Guests won’t remember what you wore when you cut their hair, but they will remember if you looked professional. Keeping your clothes well-maintained with a great fit will do just that. You won’t need a ton of clothes; just a few key pieces that will get you through school.

Accessories

If you feel like a dress code will cramp your style, don’t worry! You will most likely be able to accessorize, so show what you love. Headbands, belts, earrings – you can add a pop of color to set your style off. You can be professional and have your own style at the same time.

Manicured Nails

It’s easy to let your nails slide. You’re busy. Your hands will be in constant motion – polish chips happen. But, a cosmetologist should be mindful of the Guest they are servicing. I actually had this experience. I went to a Student Stylist. I honestly don’t remember the quality of the manicure service, what I remember is her chipped polish. There was just a little bit left on each nail – as she was removing my polish, I just kept wondering why she didn’t take better care of her nails. You’ll be around professional products – and you’ll be lucky enough to get them at really great prices. Even if you invest in one great color and keep your nails manicured with it, you will look professional. Again, no Guest will remember the specific color. They will remember the overall look – good or bad.

Hair

Ok, this might seem really obvious, but you want to have good hair – hair that looks stylish and well maintained. We all have those mornings where we don’t feel like doing our hair – and a ponytail or bun seems like they will be our best friend. But, they aren’t. Take the time to learn some quick go to styles that you can do in a few minutes. The good news – you don’t need money for this part – you just need to take some time to learn quick styles that work for you. You tried a color change, now the color is fading and you are ok with it. But, your Guest, on the other hand, will notice – and probably won’t agree to the haircolor service you suggest. You can’t blame them – if you don’t maintain and care for your hair, how will you make theirs look good? You’re the professional?!? You’re going into the Beauty Industry – the Industry you love. Be excited to look the part! By spending a little money – but more importantly putting forth effort and a little time, you’ll have your Guests asking how they can get your style. How flattering!
