Hands-On: That’s Cosmetology School in a Nutshell

BlogBeauty Career | June 12, 2015

You’re starting cosmetology school soon and you’re not sure what to expect. Or, you’re considering beauty school, but you’re not sure if you would like it. You were bored before in school, so you’re wondering how cosmetology school will be any different.

Every student will have one or all of these thoughts at one point. So, to help you, let’s look at learning in a typical cosmetology classroom.

Your learning begins before you enter the classroom. You will be asked to look like a stylist. What does this mean? Style your hair. Experiment with make-up. Have your nails well-groomed. Dress to impress. You’ll learn that making a great impression is crucial in the Beauty Industry.

Now that you’ve practiced at home, you are in class. You will be learning so much during the day. Yes, there will be some theory – you need to know how to formulate a haircolor before you can apply it. But, as soon as you have the necessary information, you will be practicing, practicing, practicing

Mannequins.

Your mannequin will be your first step – think of it as your best friend during school. You will make your first cut with real shears on your mannequin. You will perm or relax its hair. Think of your mannequin as your first hands-on experience every time you learn a new skill.

Your classmates.

You will constantly collaborate with your classmates. You will practice for service consultations, form study groups, and perform services on each other. Your classmates will help you gain confidence as they help you along the way.

The Student Salon Floor.

When you have finished your pre-salon classes, you will continue and then finish your education on the student salon floor. You will work on Guests as your Educators guide and develop your skills. If you don’t have Guests or the student salon isn’t open, you will be performing advanced techniques on your mannequins – so that you are ready to perform whatever service a Guest requests.

Hands-on learning is what cosmetology school is all about. In order to be a fantastic stylist, you have to perform services. The more you do, the more confident you become. Your cosmetology school education will be designed to prepare you from day one to live your dream.
