5 Style Resolutions for a Beauty-ful 2014

by Lorraine Letcavage

A new year in fashion and beauty is upon is, and you know what that means. Many style mavens will bid adieu to this past year with strong plans for self-improvement in 2014. Are you ready to change? I know I am!

To make successful resolutions, you’ll first need to reflect back and analyze yourself. Think about which trends worked, and which didn’t. Plan a strategy for beauty routines you hope to implement during the entire year. Don’t let your big plans fizzle out come mid-February. Stay firm, focused and educated along the way. The rewards will be worth it.

Here are some ideas for better beauty outcomes in 2014:

1) Stop hurting your hair.

We color it, bleach it, heat it, curl it, and then do it all over again, repeatedly. Ouch! Our tender tresses are crying out for better treatment. Rescue them with top quality salon products such as the It’s a 10 Miracle line. These popular products work wonders to deliver 10 healthy hair benefits in one bottle. It’s called “miracle” because it truly is one.

Let’s also give tired strands a rest. Break free from daily heat styling once in a while. Instead, air dry and tousle with a bit of texturizing spray. Or use some fun accessories to play up what you have rather than struggling to change what nature wants to do.

And finally, trim regularly and lose the dead ends. Remember that no style will look good on frizzy, damaged hair. Get in shape with a clean slate, then create!

2) Treat yourself to at least one new styling tool.

Give yourself a lift by trying a new hair tool this year. You may be surprised by the cool choices out there. Curling irons have certainly come a long way. No clips, fun shapes, and safer on hair. Imagine that!

Check out conical taper irons by Babyliss, who also offers the MiraCurl styling tool. Find more options here.

3) See red this year.

Feeling shy about turning red? With multiple shades available for 2014, there’s a red for every head! Hairstylists love to use this color on clients, and are highly skilled in choosing the best tone to flatter your features. You’ll feel trendy and confident.  Start by looking here to learn what works for you!

4) Nail it!

Fun, fashionable nail trends will grow even stronger this year.  Gone are plain nails and ho-hum colors. Instead you’ll see explosions of color in vivid nail art designs, decals, strips, tips, glitter and gels. Shellac manicures for lasting color will remain in demand. You really can’t escape this fingertip fun- it’s everywhere. Begin with a salon manicure to grow a healthy base for the show of hands to come. It’s a great way to add pizazz and personality to your style.

5) Brush up on application.

Still on the eternal quest for that perfect lipstick or eye shadow? If you have drawers filled with all the “wrong” choices and none seem to look right, it may not be the product at fault after all. Rethink the art of makeup application for 2014.

Have you ever visited a store makeup counter and became mesmerized at how different you look when the artist applies makeup for you? The secret is the brush. Invest in quality applicators for lips, eyes, brows, blush and powder. Ask the salesperson or a salon esthetician for guidance.

As smoky eyes with multidimensional shadows continue to be all the rage, you can’t just swipe and go anymore. You need good cosmetic brushes and techniques for using them. The right brush can soften appearance so that makeup won’t look harsh, but instead provide smooth, controlled strokes that blend well to your skin. Pretty soon you’ll be portrait perfect!

These 5 suggestions can help to ring in the New Year with change. You can try one or all, and add more if you’d like. There’s no time like the present to plan for a better future. Happy New Year!
