Tresses and Dresses: How to Pick Your Perfect Prom Hairstyle

by Jess Quandel

When you find that perfect dress, you’ll do whatever it takes to have it. It belongs to you from the moment you lay eyes on it. It’s (insert ‘sigh’ here) The One.

But that’s not always the case with the rest of your look. From hair to makeup, to shoes and accessories, one wrong choice could leave that perfect dress, less than perfect on prom night.

Here are some helpful tips to consider as you decide how to wear your most important accessory.

1. CONSIDER THE NECKLINE OF YOUR DRESS

Strapless is always a favorite for proms and it’s actually the most versatile in terms of choices for your hair. This year, loose waves falling over one shoulder is far and away the most popular trend.

Other necklines get a bit more challenging. Halter tops are super stylish and very feminine, but because they show a lot of shoulder, updos can make you look too bare on top. Leaving your hair all down can cover up that pretty neckline. So, go for something in between. Loose, over the shoulder braids are a good look for this type of dress, as well as half up/half down styles.

Soft necklines, such as spaghetti straps, call for a delicate matching tresses. Side-chignons, tousled just enough for that wispy look always give these necklines a romantic and soft look.

2. CHECK THE FORECAST

Your local TV weatherman is a good source when deciding how to wear your hair on prom night. Does your hair frizz in humid, sticky weather? Then a super sleek style when it’s going to rain may not be the best choice. When it’s cool and dry, does your hair fall limp? If so, then those beautiful flowing curls may be ready to call it quits long before the night is over.

3. WHAT IS YOUR FACE SHAPE?

Take into consideration what flatters you most. Working with the natural shape of your face will balance your look and highlight your face. For round faces, experts recommend updos, as they tend to elongate the look of your face. Half updos and loose flowing curls look best on longer faces.

4. FIND YOUR COMFORT ZONE

Prom should be a night you’ll never forget, for all the right reasons. Wearing a hairstyle that makes you uncomfortable or less confident will keep you worried about your appearance and take away from your experience. Go with a style that not only looks good, but feels good.
