Angela DeGoey, a student at Empire Beauty School in Green Bay, Wisconsin, has been awarded the Q1 $5,000 Sport Clips Scholarship. From Factory Work to a Career in Cosmetology
Before enrolling at Empire Beauty School, Angela worked rotating 12-hour shifts in a factory. While the job provided steady income after high school, she knew it was not the right long-term path.
“I didn’t know what I wanted to pursue right away, but I knew it wasn’t working in a factory,” Angela shared. After saving enough money, she decided to invest in her future and enroll in beauty school.
Finding Purpose and Community at Empire Beauty School
Angela says one of her favorite parts of the program has been the relationships she has built and the skills she has gained.
“I’ve made a lot of friends and learned new things,” she said. “Before, I worked just to make money. Now, I am building a career that feels fulfilling and rewarding.”
She also credits her presalon instructor, Suzette, for making a lasting impact on her experience.
“She’s like the ‘mom’ of the school. She’s very caring and makes it a point to prepare us for the salon floor.”
What the Sport Clips Scholarship Means
When Angela learned she had been selected for the scholarship, her reaction was immediate.
“I was so excited and happy,” she said.
The award carries deep personal meaning. Angela’s family has faced financial challenges, with her father disabled and her mother serving as the primary provider.
“I was debating if I should go to school because of the financial burden,” she explained. “Receiving this scholarship means so much to me.”
The recognition has also strengthened her motivation.
“It gives me more motivation to keep doing the best that I can. It reminds me that I have opportunities to be successful in this industry.”
Preparing for a Future in the Salon Industry
As graduation approaches, Angela is focused on starting her career in a salon. She has been shadowing professionals and attending interviews to build connections and gain experience.
“I definitely want to work in a salon. I’ve been putting myself out there, and I know I will end up at the right spot.”

Angela encourages anyone considering beauty school to take the leap.
“If you’re considering going to beauty school, do it. You get out of it what you put into it. It’s about putting yourself out there, posting your work, and showing up. You are creating your own career.”
