How To Keep Your Hair Healthy in the Summer

by Jesse Harp

At Empire Beauty School, we know better than anyone that keeping your hair replenished and healthy is vital during these warm summer days. That’s why our beauty industry professionals are ready to equip you with hair care tips to maintain your locks throughout the next few months.

According to Empire Haircare Specialist, Tairica Ryals, helping your hair retain moisture is the most important thing to remember when coming up with your summer hair regimen.

“We can already tell it’s going to be a hot summer,” Ryals said. “So the key thing this summer is going to be hydration.”

Ryals shared that there are a variety of techniques and treatments available for anyone wanting to lock moisture into their hair, namely hydration masks, and leave-in conditioners. These treatments are even more beneficial to people who have color-treated hair, as the chemicals cause hair to lose moisture as well.

For those who had to maintain their own hair over the course of the last year due to the Covid-19 lockdown, Ryals suggests paying a visit to a hairstylist for some professional treatments to help restore health to hair and give it a more polished look. Keratin and protein treatments, which aid to strengthen the hair, are both great treatments to ask your stylist about.

Ryals, who took the time to personally deliver special shampoos and conditioners to her clients during lockdown, emphasizes the importance of preparing your hair for the unexpected with keratin and smoothing treatments, as they create stronger, sleeker, more manageable hair.

“Covid 19 really proved to us that you never know what could happen,” Ryals said. “And so the smoothing treatments that they’re getting are helping them easily maintain hair at home.”

Those who love to spend time in the water during the summer might think they’re off the hook when it comes to keeping hair hydrated, however, swimmers need to focus even more on locking in moisture. Ryals shared that chlorine can actually leave deposits on hair, not only sapping it of moisture but also leaving a green coating on lighter colored hair. To combat this, she suggests creating a barrier around the hair with conditioner before taking a dip in the pool. Cream conditioners work best for those with thicker, more coarse hair, while spray-in conditioner is a better option for those with finer hair.

Now that you’ve tackled your summer haircare basics with Empire Beauty School, it’s time to let down your hair and ring in the Summer of 2021.
